Marah

For today's reflections, I have composed a villanelle. It's called "Marah."

From slavery through the wastelands we were led,
the sun to punish and the wind to blow.
No leaven in the loaves, and wine of red.

Brick and brick until our knuckles bled,
and bitter herbs and sweat and sons of woe.
From slavery through the wastelands we were led.

We fell each night like dead men into bed,
emancipated stars and us below.
No leaven in the loaves, and wine of red.

In fear and wonder Egypt's wail we fled,
and as we walked we spied the sun's first glow.
From slavery through the wastelands we were led.

All wondering, all walking, all were fed;
the wellspring, and the bread scattered like snow.
No leaven in the loaves, and wine of red.

The tent of meeting filled with cloud and spread
with wind, and every mountain was made low.
From slavery through the wastelands we were led,
no leaven in the loaves, and wine of red.
